Performance projects: 1990 2001

2000: performances with the Indian sitar virtuoso Baluji Shrivastav.
2000: performances with the renowned Turkish lutenist Cemal Akkiraz and vocalist Sabahat Akkiraz . 
2000: performances with the Lyon Orchestre Contemporain.
1999: collaborated with composer Barrington Pheloung on the music for the highly successful Shaolin Monks' show "Shaolin Wheel of Life" and played pipa with members of the UK Chinese Ensemble during the "Wheel of Life" world tour in 1999-2001. 
February, 1999: Collaborated with Karl Jenkins to compose and perform music for Chinese New Year in Manchester. This was the subject of a half hour television documentary "Classic Challenge" on Channel 4 in December, 2000.
1996: worked with the well-known Chinese composers Tan Dun, Qu Xiaosong and Guo Wenjing on the "New Tide" project, performing at the Royal Festival Hall. 
1994, 1996, 1998: solo performances in the Purcell Rooms, Southbank Centre, London. 
1990-1995: performances and recordings with WOMAD. 
1990-1991: "The Middle Kingdom" - a Comtemporary Chinese Musical Theatre, with renowned Chinese vocalist Liu Sola. 
Other activities include:
 
  • solo concerts in various countries, including USA, Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, France, Germany, Holland and the UK (1992-present)
  • regular solo performances for the Victoria & Albert Museum's summer activities (1992-1999)
  • performances at the Edinburgh Festival (August, 1995)
  • work with the composer Trevor Jones
  • solo concert as part of the celebrations for the return of Hong Kong to China (July, 1999)
  • solo pipa performance at the British Museum for the Queen and the Chinese Premiere Zhang Zemin (October, 1999)
  • guqin performance on the Channel 4 television programme "Howard Goodall's Big Bangs" (1999)
  • several performances with the Grand Union Orchestra, including "Where  Rivers Meet", broadcast on BBC Radio 3 (December, 2000)
  • design and production of two CDs featuring the UK Chinese Ensemble(1999, 2000)
  • the Worldwide Television television series "UK Today" featured a profile of Cheng Yu. It is broadcast monthly in more than 150 countries as well as by several major airlines. The programme featuring Cheng Yu was shown in February, 2001.
  • the Chinese television series "Across England" made a programme featuring Cheng Yu. Each half hour programme in the 13 part series documents a Chinese artist living in England. It is to be broadcast by China's main national broadcast company CCTV in China in 2001.
  • experimental music performance with the London Musicians' Collective (June, 2001)
  • arrangement of music by Strauss and Tchaikowsy for Chinese ensemble commissioned by Zomba Productions (June, 2001)
