5-stringed pipa concerts and recording in Seoul, Korea: 28 November – 15 December 2005
On December 6th Cheng Yu premiered her 5-stringed pipa music at a concert hall  in Seoul, South Korea with Korean musicians. It is the first 5-stringed pipa performance since the 1920s, when both the  4-and 5-stringed Korean pi'pa disappeared. She performed Gyewon Byeon's compositions and recorded the music for a CD which will be published under a major Korean record label in spring 2006.

 Recording Project: Heart of Asia, 1416 November 2005

The musicians of the UK Chinese Ensemble worked with composer Robert Foster to record an album named Heart of Asia in one of the London’s recording studios. It will be published by EMI in spring 2006.

Six musicians from the UK Chinese Ensemble played traditional and modern Chinese music at the Royal Academy of Arts in conjunction with the China Arts Exhibition: The Three Emperors 16621795.

Conference presentation Wednesday, April 13th

Cheng Yu presented a paper "Creating the lost Tang (8th century) five-stringed pipa for the 21st century" at the conference of The British Forum for Ethnomusicology and the AHRB Research Centre for Cross-Cultural Music and Dance Performance.

Musicport 2004 World Music Festival: 1:00pm, 24 October 2004, Whitby

The UK Chinese Ensemble will be playing a lunchtime concert at the colourful 3-day World Music Festival. Four musicians will play both solo and ensemble music with a selection of traditional and modern Chinese pieces. Instruments used will be  pipa (4-stringed lute), erhu (2-stringed violin), dizi (bamboo flute) and yangqin (hammered dulcimer).

Recording Project: 13-14th October 2004

Cheng Yu has been commissioned by Youth Music to write a children's song. The song, called "Jasmine Flower" is to be published at the end of 2004 as part of a book, entitled  "Singbook", with an accompanying CD. Cheng Yu and The UK Chinese Ensemble will be recording in London’s Whitfield Studio.

 "Singbook" consists of songs from different cultures with arrangements and accompaniments. It will be published in December 2004.   

Chinese music performance for the Silk Road Exhibition

The British Library held an exhibition of treasures from the Silk Road during the summer months. For this important event, manuscripts and paintings from all parts of the old silk route were brought together again for the first time since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century.

 Chinese Music Summer School

Following the success of the 2003 qin  (guqin - Chinese 7-string zither) summer school, there was a one week Chinese Music Summer School on July 24th - 30th 2004, giving seven full days of expert tuition on Chinese instrumental music, at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The tutors were: guqin master Professor Li Xiangting, pipa virtuoso Cheng Yu, dizi master Ning Baosheng, and erhu soloist Hu Bin. It was part of the Summer Music School programmes organised by Asian Music Circuit  (AMC). The week provided a rare opportunity to learn and explore Chinese music in the UK. Classes were open to all takers, beginners and advanced.
