Meeting 20 August 2016



Introduction

This, the 83rd meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held at the home of Venus Wong, London.

This was a special gathering to welcome Dr Yip Mingmei, a well-known qin player, scholar, author and painter from Hong Kong currently resident in New York. She gave a very interesting talk on the subject of "Beautiful Hands - Finger Configuration and its Philosophical Symbolism in Qin Music 手语 -- 古琴的指法美与象征意义".

  2. Ping Sha Luo Yan 平沙落雁 (Wild Geese Descending on the Level Sand), played by Julian Joseph
  3. Chun Xiao Yin 春晓吟 (Song for a Spring Dawn), played by Venus Wong
  4. Xiang Fei Yuan 湘妃怨 (Lament of Concubine Xiang), played and sung by Elaine Yu (qin) and Yip Mingmei (voice)
  5. Guanshan Yue 关山月 (Mooon over the Mountain Pass), played and sung by Elaine Yu (qin) and Yip Mingmei (voice)
  6. Meihua San Nong 梅花三弄 (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom), played by Yip Mingmei
  7. Jiu Kuang 酒狂 (Drunken Ecstasy), played by Desiré Victoria
  8. Jiu Kuang 酒狂 (Drunken Ecstasy), played by Yip Mengmei




The London Youlan Qin Society would like to thank Asia House for hosting the yaji, Tan Huisan of the Department of Music at SOAS for inviting us to hold our meeting there during the Buddhst Ferstival, and the volunteers from the Fo Guang Shan Temple for all their help.
